Bentley Crew is franchisee of the new Muswellbrook
sSs which has traded very strongly since it opened
on 8 February 2006. The 74-seat restaurant is in heritage-listed
Loxton House, a sandstone building that dates back to 1847 and
is next door to the Tourist Information Centre. Before
becoming a franchisee, Bentley, 40, spent two years with sSs,
training at the Brisbane restaurant. He then relocated to
Muswellbrook, which is in the Upper Hunter – an area
with many wineries, coal mines and horse studs.
At the
Dubbo sSs, Dean Hallford, 36, and
his stepfather, Chris Ellis, are the franchisees.
They are both originally from Tamworth and Dean is a chef
by trade and has worked in lots of restaurants.
Located
on a busy intersection and just a short walk from the centre
of town, the Dubbo restaurant which opened on April 15 is
one of the largest in the sSs chain. It seats 130 people and
has a separate beer garden area that adds a further 30 seats
outdoors in summer.

sSs
wins seven regional awards |

sSs
continues its award-winning streak, picking up seven awards
so far this year, six of them in the regional judging for the
Restaurant and Caterers Awards (RCA).
It began in Queensland when Toowoomba
sSs won Best New Restaurant and
Best Chef Owner of a Restaurant, in the regional
judging for the Toowoomba region on June 19, qualifying for
the RCA Queensland finals in Brisbane on 18 September.
sSs then received three awards in the RCA’s
New South Wales regional judging in the Best Themed
Restaurant category. Cessnock sSs
won in the Hunter Valley region on June 22, Lake Munmorah
sSs topped the central coast region on July 17 and
Tamworth sSs won the northern region on July
31. Now these three restaurants go up against each other in
the Best Themed Restaurant category at the RCA state final
at the Westin Hotel in Sydney in September 2006.
Not to be outdone, Coffs Harbour sSs
won the Tourism Restaurant category in the
northern region in the RCA regional judging on July 31, so
two of our restaurants were winners that night.
Coffs Harbour sSs has entered
the Tourism, Restaurant and Catering Services Awards
which will be held at Coffs Harbour on August 31. Franchisees,
Jarrod and Maree Medway, are hoping for a
hat trick, having won at both the regional and state level
in these awards for the last two years.

Cessnock
& Toowoomba sSs break cover records |

Cessnock
sSs has continuously broken records this winter as
the restaurant experienced its busiest time to date for franchisees
Jason and Jacinta Benkoe.
The restaurant’s first record was established
two weeks after opening on Mother’s Day in 2003, with
154 covers. This record was broken in July 2005 with 164 covers.
Then, in July this year, Cessnock
sSs had a run of three record-breaking weeks
in a row on three consecutive Saturday nights.
The first weekend of the school holidays recorded
171 covers, the next weekend it was 174, then the following
weekend it reached an amazing 200.
This is an extraordinary achievement considering
the restaurant seats 94!
"Tourism has picked up and people love
to visit the Hunter during the Winter to enjoy the log fires
and wines,” said Jacinta.
"Cessnock is buzzing and it’s the
busiest it’s been in four years. It’s very exciting.”
Toowoomba sSs, which celebrates its first
birthday on 5 September 2006, set a new record
in July when it had 211 covers on a Saturday night in the
160-seat restaurant.

Biggest

Australia’s
biggest loser, Adro Sarnelli, is becoming ‘a
regular’ at sSs, having eaten at three of our
restaurants – Tamworth, Lake Munmorah and Coffs
Harbour.
"He lives on the central coast and is a bit of a fan of
our restaurant,” said Lake Munmorah sSs
franchisee, Keith Stirrat.
"Adro often eats there with his personal trainer, Ray Kelly,
and Lake Munmorah sSs is where he chose to
celebrate his birthday along with 45 guests.”
Even though Adro has lost more than 50kgs, he still manages
to enjoy a high protein three-course meal at
sSs.
"He always starts off with our famously tender baby back
ribs, then has an Aussie fillet steak with sweet potato and
quite often has the trio of summer sorbets for dessert,”
Keith said. |

Celebrity
Shank Challenge at Lake Munmorah |

Former Australian Wallabies, Ray Price, Mark Ella and Mick Martin,
comedian Mick Meredith and Dobell MP, Ken Ticehurst, took part
in a Celebrity Shank Challenge at Lake
Munmorah sSs in April 2006.
In
the sSs Shank Challenge, each patron who
can eat an entrée, the monster beef shank and a dessert,
gets the dessert free, their name is added to the Challenge
Honour Roll and they get a sSs cap.
In the
Celebrity Shank Challenge, Mick Meredith won the Golden Bone
Award title when he finished his three courses before his
fellow competitors.
Mick ate
his entrée of baby back ribs, a 2.5kg beef shank served
with baked potato, succotash (mixed vegies) and a side salad,
as well as Belgian waffles in just over an hour!
The event
was sponsored by the local Warnervale Rugby Club which held
its season launch at the restaurant.
Lake
Munmorah sSs franchisee, Keith Stirrat,
said the shank, which is the largest dish on the sSs menu,
was very popular with patrons.
"We
sell up to 40 of them a week and have around 350 names on
our honour roll,” Keith said.

The sSs website has had a makeover which sSs
co-owner, Marlene Manvell says reflects the
professional nature of the company which is growing and evolving.
"Our
website has a new look. It’s up-to-date, colourful,
there’s lot of information and links, and it downloads
quickly,” said Marlene.
"And
all our restaurants are connected via the Internet so bookings
can be made on-line."

Wanted:
potential sSs franchisees |

Top^ |

sSs BBQ Barns owners, Graham
and Marlene Manvell are hunting for
new franchisees to operate sSs restaurants they have
on the drawing board. “We
receive inquiries on a daily basis, mainly from people who
come into our restaurants and like what they see,” said
Marlene, who describes the typical potential sSs franchisee
as someone who is friendly and hospitable, entrepreneurial
and who is going to work in the store and drive the business.
For those
who are serious and who have a potential site, sSs can provide
them with an information pack.
"We
are always looking at potential sites and potential franchisees,”
said Marlene.
"We
need to link these two vital ingredients and we need to get
them right."
"While
we have things underway everywhere as we take sSs
Australia-wide, right now our sights are set on far
north Queensland, Sydney and Brisbane,” she said.

Motivational
franchisee meeting |

Regular
franchisee marketing meetings are integral to nurturing and
developing sSs franchisees.
Success and Life was the theme of the most
recent meeting when all the sSs franchisees got together at
Tamworth, the birthplace of the sSs BBQ Barns’ brand.
The weekend began with a social get together
at Graham and Marlene Manvell’s
property. Graham cooked a feast and everyone stayed up for
the World Cup Australia final.
Our focus was on how you treat people and
what success means to you,” explained Marlene.
Motivational speaker and award-winning guitarist,
Lorin Nicholson, who is legally blind, addressed
the group about his life experiences with family and business
and the real meaning of success.
What he’s pushed himself to achieve
is amazing,” said Marlene. ”Not only was Lorin
inspirational, he left everyone speechless and there was hardly
a dry eye in the house.”
The Manvells have arranged for Lorin to visit
all sSs restaurants to motivate staff by helping them to look
at their teammates and see the positives in other people.
