Patrons are travelling from as far away as St George –
a three-hour drive – to enjoy a sSs fun dining experience
at Toowoomba on the Darling Downs.
Anita
Robinson and Nuala Lynch are franchisees of the newest
sSs, located on the corner of James and West Streets
in the biggest inland city in Australia.
“We
service a huge area from the Lockyer Valley to central western
Queensland,” said Anita, who has worked as executive
chef at five star hotels and fine dining restaurants.
Whenever
Anita used you dine at sSs, she was always amazed at the numbers
the restaurant did.
sSs founders,
Graham and Marlene Manvell, who are always on the look out
for good people, appointed Anita as Operations Manager and
Chef at the Brisbane sSs. This not only gave Anita the chance
to see first hand the potential of the sSs system but also
the determination to become a part of sSs family as a franchisee.
Within
weeks of opening in September 2005, the Toowoomba sSs (pictured)
was fully booked on weekends.
“We are dedicated to getting it right,” said Anita
(pictured), who mainly works in the kitchen and Nuala,
who is a nurse, runs the bar.

Six+
sSs’s in the pipeline |
|

Six potential new sSs restaurants are on the drawing board across
Australia – in Perth, north Queensland, Sydney
and the Hunter. And sSs also is considering an exciting
opportunity with a large national hotel group.
While the Manvell’s grand plan is to
grow the business “to the nth degree”, they’re
definitely not in a hurry.
“Find the right site and the right franchisee,
then we’ll jump,” explained Graham. “But
at sSs it takes a little longer because we’re really
careful about how we grow. We have to get the foundations
right before we take the next step.
“For us it’s not just about the
money, it’s about quality and standards and we’re
pretty protective of our brand,” said Graham.
The sSs franchise business plan is for solid,
slow expansion that ensures the business is strong on all
fronts. Established in 1993, there are six sSs restaurants
- at Tamworth, Cessnock, Coffs Harbour and
Lake Munmorah, in New South Wales, and in
Brisbane and Toowoomba,
in Queensland.
The success of each sSs is based on partnership,
teamwork, distinctive branding, comprehensive marketing, passion,
commitment and consistency.

they do and they believe that not all steakhouses
are created equal!

Manvells
awarded for outstanding contribution to business

Graham
and Marlene Manvell received the pinnacle Noel Park
Award for their outstanding contribution to business
in the Tamworth region.
The Manvells received the award before a crowd
of nearly 500 people at the Quality Business Awards, held
by the Tamworth and District Chamber of Commerce on September
16, 2005.
The annual award, established by the Chamber
in 1995, is named in honour of Noel Park, a former local state
member during the 1970s and 1980s, who strongly supported
small business in the New England region.
Chamber Manager, Max Cathcart, said Graham
and Marlene had helped put Tamworth on the map, used local
produce like buffalo and wine from the Tamworth area in their
restaurants and had grown their business significantly.
“They are a great couple. They complement
each other, work well together as a team, show a lot of initiative,
have strong entrepreneurial skills and are held in high esteem
in the town and district,” Max said.
Graham
said he and Marlene were “ultra honoured and very humbled”
to receive the award which is proudly displayed in the Tamworth
sSs restaurant.
Look out
for it next time you’re dining there with us.

2005
- an award-winning year |
|

sSs has established
a fine tradition for being officially recognised as being at
the leading edge of what it does best - providing patrons with
good food, friendly service and a
relaxed atmosphere.
sSs restaurants have received more than 40
awards and the most recent went to Coffs Harbour sSs which
won the Restaurant and Catering Services
section of the NSW Tourism Awards in Sydney
on November 24, 2005 for the second consecutive year. This
was hot on the heels of Coffs Harbour winning the Best
Franchise section of the Coffs Harbour Small Business
Awards of the Year on November 12, 2005.
Earlier last year, at the Australian
Tourism Awards held in Alice Springs in February,
Coffs Harbour was a finalist in the Restaurant
and Catering Services section. And in May it won
Best Steak Restaurant for the North Coast
and New England region at the Restaurant and Catering
Awards held at Coffs Harbour.
Three sSs restaurants – Cessnock, Lake
Munmorah and Coffs Harbour – competed against each other
when they all were finalists in the Restaurant and Catering
Association’s awards for Best Steak Restaurant. Last
September, Coffs Harbour went on to be recognised as the Best
Steak Restaurant in New South Wales in the NSW Restaurant
and Catering Awards held in Sydney.
Well
done sSs!

There’s
no way you can miss the sSs restaurants at Tamworth,
Coffs Harbour, Brisbane and
Toowoomba.
The façades of these restaurants feature
large and spectacular neon signs emblazoned
with the new sSs logo.
They’re truly eye catching and the bright
yellow flames that rise up behind the three S’s literally
glow.
This
image, built around a cattle brand, sums up what sSs is all
about - flame-grilled steaks for which the restaurants are
renowned.

Introducing
a white merlot called Pink Flamingo |
|
Top^ |
|
|
| |
White
merlot, which sounds like an oxymoron, is the latest
offering from the Lazy Poet label. It is produced exclusively
for the sSs chain of steakhouses.
“We’re selling out of our whites
which are such a success,” explained Graham Manvell,
who is always looking for a point of difference.
“So I thought, wouldn’t it be
nice to come up with a white wine made with a red grape!”
He discussed this idea with his winemaker,
John Cassegrain, and they decided to lightly bag press the
merlot grapes so they took the flesh of the grapes with just
a hint of pink from the skins.
The result is a fruity white wine with a blush
colour which the Manvells have called Pink Flamingo.
“It’s a lovely, alfresco-style
fruity wine – not sweet, not dry – just gorgeous,”
said Graham. “And it’s gone ballistic.”
Lazy Poet’s white merlot was released at the
Sydney Food Show in July 2005 where it complemented
cheeses from Dairy Farmers.
The
first release of this new wine was made with five tonnes of
merlot grapes from the Piallamore vineyard,
one of the Manvell’s three boutique vineyards in the
New England region - a new viticulture area in Australia. |

There are two new faces at sSs in Brisbane. Our new banquet
and operations managers are Sara Tye and Ben
Gambrill who are responsible for managing the Brisbane
sSs restaurant and Queen Ann conference centre. They
both have a wealth of experience in the hospitality industry
- in restaurants, functions and events, and have worked for
the Peppers Resort chain.
Welcome

sSs
favourites & latest summer menu additions |
|
Top^ |
|
|
| |
Ever wondered what is the most popular dish on the sSs menu?
It’s our rib and rump BBQ duo and for good reason.
It’s
called Best of Both Worlds because it combines
our two best menu items – melt-in-your-mouth baby back
pork ribs and tender, juicy steak, both coated with our secret
BBQ glaze and flame grilled.
This dish
epitomises everything sSs stands for – sizzling, succulent
steaks and oh so tender ribs. And it’s the obvious choice
for those who can’t make up their minds between the
ribs or a steak.
The two
newest dishes on the summer menu are baby calamari
and tender lamb shanks (pictured).
The calamari,
which is unbelievably tender, has a light salt and pepper
coating and a cajun flavour and is served with a dipping sauce
and greens.
A really
slow braising technique is used for the lamb shanks which
are finished off on the chargrill. With a herb and honey demiglaze
and served on a sizzle plate, this dish really triggers the
senses and goes superbly with our new Lazy Poet Flamingo white
merlot. |

Why
not party? |
|
Top^ |

|

sSs now offers a choice of four party menus
for groups of 10 people or more who dine together. These
set menus ensure everyone has a fun, casual evening, enjoys
good, tasty food with alternate drops and gets great service.
“You
can’t provide that sort of standard to a group of 50
people with an a-la-carte menu,” said Graham Manvell.
“But
with alternate drops everyone can still have the ribs, the
steak or the flame-grilled chicken with entrees to pass around
and they all go away having had an awesome experience.
“This
way we do what we do, and we do it ultra well,” Graham
said.

sSs
has received some fabulous national media coverage
recently.
A three page story appeared in the Walkabout
Dining section of R.M. Williams Outback magazine
with photos of Marlene and Graham with their buffalo herd
and Graham in the kitchen.
Another
three page article with lots of colour photos was published
in the Inside Dining section of Food Service.
And Open House magazine dedicated a page
to a Chefs Out of Town story on the Manvells and sSs.

The
corporate sSs experience at Queen Ann |
|
Top^ |
|
|

While
Queen Ann boutique conferencing and reception
centre is still Brisbane’s best kept secret, word is getting
out that it’s an ideal corporate event venue.
Seminars, launches, training sessions, staff
parties and corporate lunches and dinners are increasingly
being held at Queen Ann.
It is centrally located, downstairs from sSs
BBQ Barns, on the conference level of Pacific International
Apartments, on the corner of Queen and Ann streets in the
CBD.
This venue exudes a timeless elegance and
all the latest technological aids are available for hire -
P. A. system, five-disc CD player, electronic lectern, flip
chart, white board, overhead projector and wall-mounted screens.
The air-conditioned rooms also have a fully adjustable lighting
system and complete blackout.
The food at Queen Ann is a talking point –
it comes freshly made from the sSs kitchen so it’s ‘real
food’, made to the strict sSs standard. The scones and
Danish pastries are made ‘in-house’, the cream
for the scones includes crushed strawberries and of course
sSs’s famous baby ribs are on the menu. Guests trying
them for the first time are ‘blown away’ by their
tenderness and taste.
The romantic ambience created by the white marble staircase,
candelabra & candlelit table settings & parquetry
dance floor at Queen Ann makes it perfect as a wedding venue
too.
For
bookings and inquiries about Queen Ann, call our Sara Tye,
Banquet and Operations Manager on 07. 3832 3080.
