Introducing sSs BBQ Barns Steakhouse

Visitors to the sSs BBQ Barns Steakhouse expect to get a little country magic. It's a phenomenon that has captured the hearts of city and country folk alike.

There's no single element that sets the sSs apart. It's a combination of country smiles and country hospitality. It is unique, popular and it is "quintessential" country.

sSs owners are Graham and Marlene Manvell. Graham, a chef, has worked in some of the top kitchens in the nation and around the world. By his own admission, sSs is a world away from the silver service restaurants. And yes, he could still write his own ticket. But the sSs is a love and a way of life and his way of having "fun".

Brighter than the flashy neon sign out the front, the Manvell credo clearly shines through the sSs experience. There is almost a mid-west feel about the place. It's the swinging doors, it's the neon beer signs, it's the timber floors and it's the music. The décor is typically country. The mood is typically country. The quality is typically Manvell.

Graham says this country is blessed with the best meat and produce there is to be chosen from. Our choice steaks come from prime stock - many specifications are met including ageing, young premium quality and grading. This, and Graham's cooking process ensures tenderness on the plate. But as you would expect from people like the Manvells, there is more to the sSs menu than thick, tender steaks. The variety comes from the entrees - many spicy if you dare - the main meal alternatives (and they're many) and the desserts that are so good they're almost criminal. All this served with hearty taste and size you soon come to recognize as the sSs trademark.

And as good as it is, there is no single formula to the menu. Graham and Marlene are constantly trying something new - just when you thought it couldn't possibly get any better. Enter the latest addition to the test the biggest of appetites - the sSs Beef Shank. Graham laughs as he describes it …

"It's huge and people find it hard to finish but they're extremely popular" he says. "The secret is in the slow cooking technique, the way it's finished off on the grill and the delicious special barbeque glaze - you have to try it to believe it!" If you can eat an entree, the shank meal, you get desert free. And then if you eat this you go on the "Big Shank Honour Roll".

History

Graham and Marlene Manvell had a dream - to open a chain of or restaurants around Australia.

Their dream is coming true.

Graham is a chef of world renown. He started his apprenticeship in Australia, and has worked around the globe in places such as the London Savoy, the Sebel Townhouse, Mount Lofty House and Powerhouse International.

He is one of the most highly skilled and awarded chefs in Australia, and his career achievements are remarkable:

He was a member of the highest-ranking Australian National Team to compete in the Culinary Olympics in Frankfurt. The team won a Gold Medal in the coveted "Restaurant of Nations" section.

He won several prestigious International Medals in Germany, Luxembourg and Singapore and has gained over thirty National Culinary Competition Medals.

He is very highly regarded as a judge and has gained International Standing with contacts far and wide, he travels regularly to major competitions and trade shows to keep in touch with current trends. Graham was the founding secretary of the Australian Culinary Federation.

Marlene's background is very noteworthy, and she too has worked overseas in the service industry. Her knowledge and experience gained from having worked overseas is impressive and she has a superb background in professional hospitality within Australia.

Graham and Marlene set up Jumbuck Cottage in Tamworth during August 1990. It is a credit to their skill and hard work that Jumbuck Cottage was recognized as the place to dine for fine food, wine and excellent service. Their popular 4 Star Guesthouse was one of the latest additions to their exciting, and fast growing corporation. This has now been sold to expand the sSs BBQ Barn Steakhouse chain.

The first of the Saloons opened in November 1993 and is forging ahead in competitive markets. The strategy and the concept behind the sSs BBQ Barns Steakhouse has been to cater for a very broad market - families, bachelors, young people, more mature people, traveliers and business people all feel welcome.

The dream has become reality, as more sSs BBQ Barns Steakhouses are opened, in what will become known around Australia, as the home grown chain of steakhouses and BBQ Barns offering excellent customer service with a little escapism thrown in for good measure.
